More Bad News for Organic Search + New Research on Paid Search, Social Media, and Mobile Ads

If you’re hoping organic search is the way to increase conversions on Google, we’ve got some sobering news for you:  organic search on Google is producing just 22% of site visits, according to the new 3Q 2019 Digital Marketing Report from Merkle.

Here are a few of the others insights from the report.

Paid Search

Google tracking shows that if you’re not in one of the first two positions in paid search, you’re getting way less clicks.  That makes sense, but the gap between 1-2 and 3-4 has been widening for some time.

Phones produce nearly 68% of Google search ad click.  On Google shopping traffic the share of clicks attributable to phones is greater than 70%.  Desktop is down to 27%. Interestingly, it’s the opposite on Microsoft search.  Desktop reigns supreme with 65% while phones are at 27%.

By the way, DuckDuckGo is started to make some significant inroads and closing the gap with Bing.

Social Media

Visits to brand sites from social media has registered just 4% over the last two quarters.  Brands aren’t getting clicks to websites from social in any great numbers.  When they do click, 81% of visitors are using a mobile device.
